About

Hi, I'm Maryam Monsef.

I'm the founder of ONWARD, a former federal Cabinet Minister, an International Speaker having spoken at Davos, G7, G20, and the United Nations, a Trail College Fellow at Trent University, and aunt to two inspiring and strong-minded little girls.

I'm a growth-oriented leader, fierce advocate, and facilitator. My life began as a refugee, leading me to community organizing and to Canada’s Parliament, where I was tasked with driving impact for social and economic justice files in Canada and around the world.

I believe in being the change I wish to see in the world, and that passion has led me to run for Mayor of Peterborough, finishing a close second, and then to successfully run for Member of Parliament in 2015. Once elected to the House of Commons, representing my community Peterborough-Kawartha, I was appointed the youngest Minister in Canada’s first-ever cabinet with gender parity.

As Minister for various social and economic development files ([Women and Gender Equality, Rural Economic Development (WAGE/RED), International Development (ID) and Democratic Institutions (DI) I've been responsible for billions of infrastructure and social programming dollars delivered in hundreds of communities across Canada and around the world.

As a convener, connectivity is very important to me, and my policy and advocacy work has led to Canada's largest ever investments in history in high-speed internet, a ten-fold growth in support of Canada’s women’s sector; and hosted the largest feminist gatherings of the 21st Century. For this work, I was recognized along with absolute icons such as RBG, Michelle Obama and Malala as Top 20 Global Influencers of Gender Equality, in 2018 and 2019.

I currently chair the Women United Campaign with the United Way Peterborough & District, and work with Afghan women human rights defenders and other high-impact teams locally, nationally and globally to deliver strong results.
