In August 1967 — eight months before the Civil Rights Act of 1968 was signed into law — the Austin Capital City Lions Club held their first meeting on the campus of Huston-Tillotson University - Austin, Texas, a private historically Black university and Austin’s first institute of higher learning. More than 50 men attended. The club, which they believe to be the first predominantly Black club in the United States, continues to meet on the historic campus to this day.
